Problem
The Real Challenges
of Hair Loss

Hair loss isn’t just about looks — it can change how you feel about yourself every day

A receding hairline can make you look older than you feel.

Thinning at the crown or temples often forces you to change hairstyles to cover up.

Many people describe avoiding mirrors, photos, or social events altogether.

And with some treatments, the trade-off can be worse: long scars, unnatural results, or months of downtime.

You deserve an option that restores your hair
and your confidence — without the compromises

Why Consider FUT?
Why FUT Still Matters in Modern Hair Restoration

While FUE is the most widely marketed technique today, FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) is far from outdated. In fact, FUT remains the best choice for some patients because:

At Surgery Group, we don’t “sell” one method. We explain both honestly, then recommend the right approach for your long-term results.

More grafts in a single session

What the FUT Procedure Involves

The FUT Procedure, Step by Step

NHS-trained neurosurgeon, now specialising in hair restoration.

01. Consultation & Planning

Surgeon designs your new hairline or coverage area, and discusses expected graft numbers.

02. Donor Strip Removal

A thin strip of scalp is removed from the donor area (usually the back of the head) under local anaesthetic.

03. Microscopic Graft Preparation & Implantation

Follicular units are separated under a microscope, ensuring minimal damage and maximum survival.
Grafts are carefully implanted into recipient areas, following natural angles and density patterns.

04. Healing & Recovery

Stitches are used to close the donor site. Recovery is typically 10–14 days, with a fine linear scar usually concealed by surrounding hair.

05. Growth Timeline

  • Shedding phase: first 2–3 weeks (normal)
  • New growth: ~3–4 months
  • Density & maturity: ~9–12 months

Comparison
FUE vs FUT — Understanding the Key Differences

To make an informed decision, it’s important to know how FUE compares to FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation, aka “strip method”). Here are the main differences:

Feature FUT (Strip Method) FUE
Donor Harvest Thin strip removed, grafts dissected under microscope Individual follicles extracted one by one
Scarring Fine linear scar, concealed by hair Tiny dot scars across donor area
Graft Numbers Higher graft yield in one session Lower per session, may need multiple
Recovery 10–14 days, stitches required 5–7 days, no stitches
Best For Advanced hair loss, maximum grafts Patients preferring short hairstyles, minimal scarring

Both techniques are excellent when performed by the right surgeon. The choice depends on your hair loss stage, goals, lifestyle, and donor area. That’s why we offer both — and recommend what’s genuinely best for you.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Questions

Will FUT leave a scar?

Yes, a fine linear scar remains, but it’s usually concealed under existing hair. Most patients report it’s not noticeable unless hair is shaved very short.

Discomfort levels are similar. FUT requires stitches, which are removed after healing. Most patients manage with mild pain relief.

New hair begins at 3–4 months, with full results at 9–12 months.

Men or women with advanced hair loss who want maximum grafts in fewer sessions.
